Have you ever had a sales man (or woman) knock at your door and try to sell you something? Have you been called up on phone by a sales person trying to do what he (or she) knows best?
Well, I have…especially the later. In fact, I once spent a week with a direct sales company, and from my interaction with sales people, I learnt a few basic techniques, that I believe they must have learnt from no other person than Jesus Himself…
My Bible study yesterday was on Matthew chapter 4, and it was like I had never read that portion of the Bible before. In verse 19, Jesus called His first two disciples, brothers Peter and Andrew (by the way, have you noticed that Jesus’ first four disciples were two sets of brothers?)…
The way that He called them, and the words which He spoke, reminded me very much of sales men…
Jesus said to them “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men” (NIV)…now let’s break that down into the basic techniques of a sales man;
- He spoke with Authority…”Come!” HE commanded
- He told them what they had to do…”Follow Me“
- He communicated the benefit (reward) to them…”I will make you fishers of men“
- HE spoke in the language that they understood…”Fishers“…because they were by profession, fishermen
And in verses 20 and 22, something about the way He spoke, evoked an immediate, positive response in His potential disciples…”At once, they left their nets and followed him”…”and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him” (NIV).
PS; What is your understanding of a “Fisher of men”? I think it means a “soul-winner”…what do you think?

Truly, Jesus is a perfect example for every one of us to emulate
i luv this post…i have never looked at that scripture like this….
reali interesting..
remain blessed..
…and to think we are hardly patient enough to hear these sales representatives out.
Yes, I agree with you a Fisher of Men is a winner of souls. I guess Jesus just wants us to hear his message and follow him relentlessly. Thanks for sharing this wise message
well said…. for him to have had as much impact as he did, he had to have done the basics right i would say…
Thanks for inspiring us with the scriptures, fishers of men definitely means winners or followers. Go out and win souls for my kingdom. How was your weekend?
i think fishers of men means…winners of soul for the kingdom of God or something like that.
btw:nice post.
I certainly think that fishers of men are people who win souls for Christ. People who go out in the world and get men and woman for the kingdom.
Well just thinking aloud, I think fisher of men is a soul winner. But now in this context as u hv already broken it down Jesus Commanded Follow me and the reward is he will make u fisher of men. So in essence I think making ursef available as an instrument for him and he will do the winning of the souls. “My opinion”.
Wow. . . U really explained this in a short and understandable way. . . Wow thanks for d insight. U re a grt salesman
Jesus was also the number one networker. He created a network from just 12 people and more than 2,000 years after, the network is still spreading across the whole world.
No doubt, j-e-s-u-s was good. he spoke in a language they understood. yeah!
Truly he was a great sales man.
Thanks for sharing that.
And hey good seeing you on mine’s..
hmm…never thought of it from that perspective – the sales man bit. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Hope you will update soon with some more knowledge.
Hmmm, i never understood it like this until you broke it down. Thank you…
I dont think anyone would be a better sales man that Jesus, who was God himself and knows all things
I also want to think that the disciples must also have seen Him in action (Luke 5:1-11) hence they followed Him.
